Challenges
The fragmented editing workflow
Three problems stood between ZED and the editing experience they envisioned. Here's what we had to solve.
The fragmented editing workflow
When someone wants to upscale an image, remove a background, and apply a specific filter, they usually have to download three different specialized apps. This completely kills the creative process. ZED needed a way to pull all these scattered tools into one centralized interface without making the app feel cluttered.
Switching between apps also means re-uploading the same photo three or four times, losing quality with every export. ZED needed every tool sharing the same working file, not a chain of imports and exports between disconnected apps.
Breaking down technical barriers
Most existing AI models require a heavy technical background to install and use properly. Regular mobile users hit a wall when dealing with prompts, sampling steps, or masking layers. The challenge was wrapping complex Python AI microservices in an interface simple enough for anyone to use without reading a manual.
Sampling steps, masking layers, and model checkpoints mean nothing to someone who just wants a cleaner photo. The interface needed to hide that complexity entirely, surfacing a single tap or slider for what would otherwise take a technical pipeline to configure.
Managing mobile performance
Running high quality image generation and upscaling takes massive computing power. Doing this on a mobile device without draining the battery or making the user wait minutes per edit is incredibly difficult. ZED needed an architecture that could offload the heavy processing to the cloud while staying responsive on the phone.
A phone simply doesn't have the GPU headroom that a generation model needs. Every screen also had to stay responsive while a request was in flight, so the app never felt like it froze while waiting on a result.

A unified editing suite
A comprehensive Flutter application housing everything from basic cropping to advanced vectorization. Users drop in a photo, remove the background, replace an object, and upscale the final result without leaving the main canvas.
Intuitive AI integration
The mobile frontend connects directly to a custom FastAPI Python backend. Users tap a button to fix skin tones, type plain English to generate a new background, or drag a slider to apply DSLR style blur — no ML knowledge required.
Cloud powered processing engine
A dedicated AWS infrastructure utilizing EC2 and GPU optimized processing. The actual AI computation happens on our servers, returning the finished high resolution image instantly back to the screen.
